The Yorktown Bonnet Pattern

The Yorktown Bonnet Pattern

Digital download of the "Yorktown Bonnet" 18th century women's hat/bonnet pattern, appropriate for impressions dating 1760-1800. This pattern includes directions and tips for construction of one style of 18th century bonnet (often called a "market bonnet").

This pattern includes a "choose your own adventure" style of constructing your bonnet, with options given for linings, hand-stitching, machine-stitching, and caul style.  Additionally, we have included instructions for trimming your bonnet in a number of historically-appropriate ways.

This pattern is considered a "Confident Beginner” level of difficulty. It assumes basic knowledge of sewing techniques, such as knotting threads, finishing threads, reading a pattern, using a pdf pattern, marking and pinning. Making this bonnet will help familiarize you with historical stitches that are helpful in more advanced patterns, such as caps.

This pattern is a collaboration between Goodwives Linens and PennyRiver Costumes.

As with all sewing and crafting, the quality of your materials and tools is important in your overall satisfaction and even the ease of your sewing experience. High-quality materials and tools are generally easier to work with, and do not “fight” the process. For historically appropriate materials and tools, please check out the Penny River Costumes Etsy store. Penny River stocks both paper patterns and materials kits.
